HEADACHES, CHIROPRACTIC, AND OPIATE ABUSE PT. 2/2

It feels wrong to blame a person for seeking out the relief of a substantial pain-source, like the headache can be, can you? Very often, Americans in pain are happy to defer to their treating physician’s assumed expertise and considered treatment. After all, it is the physicians of this country that we have collectively and primarily tasked with the proper and virtuous treatment of our medical needs, like chronic headaches. Rarely does a patient sit in an office with a doctor and consider the personal, societal, and financial effects at work that may work not only to convolute their diagnosis and treatment, but could very well saddle them with an unnecessary and comprehensively damaging opiate addiction. Hands for Life presents to the headache or migraine patient an alternative in chiropractic treatment: In fact, recent research has revealed that chiropractic care can alleviate up to 50% of clinical headaches without the use of pharmaceuticals or opiate intervention.  Writ large, opiates—particularly considering the now well-documented risks—are still overprescribed for headaches and migraines. Hands for Life, in collaboration with Advanced Back and Neck Pain Center, offers hope to the community: whether you are someone now suffering with headaches, migraines, or opiate addiction associated with these conditions—to find a therapeutic setting where patients can treat theses pains without opiates, have their voice heard by their treatment professional, and have their unique input directly informing a personalized treatment plan. Hands for Life is a non-profit organization, meaning that patients without the means or insurance generally necessary to receive chiropractic care may be seen and cared for at the Advanced Back & Neck Pain Center...

HEADACHES, OPIATE ABUSE, AND CHIROPRACTIC PT. 1/2

Since the turn of the millennium, the rate of death by opiate overdose in America has increased by eight times. In the United States, the opiate epidemic—that most citizens are now very likely either familiar with or in some capacity victims of—began its now staggering rise in the mid 1990s. As of 2024, more than 130 Americans lose their life everyday to opiate overdose. I’ll state that again for effect: Everyday, we lose 130 Americans—most of whom are in their physical or intellectual prime—to opiate abuse and misuse. Eighty-one thousand Americans—the very same strangers you pass in the grocery store, with whom you share this country, or perhaps attended school with—met their end from the ingestion of opioids: synthetic, prescription, or otherwise.  Persons unaffected by, unsympathetic to, or uninformed about the escalating opiate crisis likely rarely consider that the epidemic finds its origins more so in the work of distinguished but irresponsible physicians and avaricious pharmaceutical companies than it does in the image in the common street drug-dealer. For instance, many Americans originally seeking out care for the suffering of chronic headaches, or migraines, find themselves later suffering not only under the selfsame headaches, but now the danger and hobbling of opiate addiction, as well. Even in 2024, where pharmaceutical treatments for migraines have advanced well beyond any need for prescribing the temporary palliative of opiates, physicians continue to overprescribe these drugs.  Hands for Life was founded with this vision in mind: that the escalating opiate crisis is primarily medical in its origins, that more and more citizens were losing and continue to lose their lives, family, careers, and...

The Importance of Spinal Alignment

At some point growing up, most of us have our eyes checked, our teeth checked, our ears checked, and more.  How many of us though can truly say that we’ve had our spine checked and have done so since a young age?  Aside from the usual in-school scoliosis screening performed by the school nurse or the physical education teacher, the majority of us have never had a regular thorough and complete examination of our spine.  As a result, most of us don’t know whether or not our spine is even in alignment. Due to the relationship between your spine and your nervous system, changes in your spinal alignment can have significant adverse effects on your health.  Obviously, symptoms like low back pain and neck pain are the two big ones, but even in the absence of regular pain there could be abnormal changes that should be addressed.  In our office for example, we’ve had patients who appear completely healthy and have no history of back pain, until a simple action, like a sneeze or picking up a child, causes their back to spasm and their pain levels to shoot through the roof.  These sort of seemingly innocent actions creating this type of pain are all too common, and are usually indicative of some sort of increased spinal stress resulting from abnormal alignment. Although pain is a common symptom of spinal problems, it shouldn’t be the only focus.  The presence or absence of pain is not a true indicator of health, and the other issues resulting from problems with spinal alignment are numerous.  They include headaches, sciatica, pinched nerve pain,...
